One of the hard things about becoming a debut author is learning more than I ever wanted to know about the book business. And three of the hardest realities I’ve learned while promoting The Cyclone Release are: Bookstores are now the least efficient way to sell books. The vast majority of book sales come through online sales. Ebooks and audiobooks often outsell hardcopy books.
These are hard realities for me for lots of reasons. First, I love the feel of a bookstore. From local stores like Books Inc. Palo Alto, where I held my launch event, to Leigh’s Favorite Books in Sunnyvale, where I do most of my book shopping and which also hosted an event for me, small, local bookstores are, in my opinion, essential to healthy communities. Second, I love the feel of a hardcopy book, and, in fact, have concluded that the feel of a book is something essentially human.
