Book Birthday

This month marks one year since the launch of The Cyclone Release, my debut novel. Memories of the launch event, and all of you who came out to make that day one of the best I’ve ever had, roll through my mind all the freaking time. I’m proud of the book, and the 5-star rating it’s received on Amazon, and the “get-it” rating from Kirkus Reviews, and the opportunities I’ve had to talk about the book both online and in live appearances. But the deepest emotion I’m feeling on this book birthday for The Cyclone Release is gratitude. I’m grateful to all of you who have read and reviewed the book, and also to Kim Davis and the team at Madville Publishing who saw the promise of my work and gave me the opportunity to share it with the world.

The uninitiated and the hucksters often say, “Anyone can write a book.” But one of my favorite writing teachers, the wonderful author and poet Rebecca McClanahan, begs to differ: “The truth is,” she writes, “anyone can’t write a book. Only the person who writes the book can write the book.” And one of the best things about writing and publishing a book is, I now know that I can write the book.

With the support of many of you, I have managed, over the past 13 years, to raise over $15,000 through my annual Movember campaigns. For those of you who don’t know about Movember, my favorite way to explain it is to point to Movember founder Adam Garone’s 2011 Ted Talk, in which he explains how something that started as a drinking game between a crew of Aussie mates evolved into the world’s most important fundraising movement in support of men’s health. Through thousands of individual and team campaigns all over the world, Movember is able to drive millions of dollars every year into research on health issues that disproportionately afflict men, such as prostate cancer, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide. Napa Writers’ Salon…ICYMI
