JULY 2023

Rolling Through Summer

After taking a break from this newsletter in June, I’m now just sliding in under the wire for a July edition. For most of you, those months of June and July have been some of the hottest you’ve ever experienced, the planet once again reminding us that we need to take much more drastic action to address climate change than we have been taking. So, even as we Californians have been granted a remarkable reprieve from the extreme weather so far this year, we also recognize that it won’t last forever, and we’ll likely return very soon to the drought, wildfires, and suffocating heat that have become all-too normal everywhere.

In the meantime, Caroline and I have enjoyed these eerily comfortable summer months with lots of outdoor activities, including cycling through the oak-dotted hills, redwood forests, and magnificent coastline of this place we call home—while at the same time taking whatever steps we can to reduce our carbon footprint and conserve precious resources.

Accolades for The Cyclone Release

In mid-July, I learned that Wisconsin Bookwatch, an imprint of The Midwest Book Review, had given The Cyclone Release this glowing review:

“A deftly crafted and compelling novel of Silicon Valley that is truly impressive when considering that The Cyclone Release is author Bruce Overby's debut as a novelist. He has written an original and entertaining story populated with memorable characters and the kind of intense and narrative driven storytelling style that will keep the reader vividly engaged from cover to cover. Blending romance with psychological fiction, The Cyclone Release is a highly recommended pick for community library fiction collections.”

The affirmation I get from words like this—and from the words of all of the 31 reviewers who have given The Cyclone Release a 4.9 out of 5 rating on Amazon—are some of the many things that make this writing game well worth the sweat and toil.

The Cyclone Release Goes to the Wine Country

I’ll very soon avail myself of two incredible opportunities to read from and talk about The Cyclone Release in the Napa Valley, the epicenter of California’s wine country. If you’re attending the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference or planning a trip for the fall crush, make a note!

On August 4th at 9:00 a.m., I’ll be taking part in a Debut Author’s Panel at the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference. The chance to appear at a conference that features luminaries like Lan Samantha Chang and Peter Orner is… amazing.

On October 7th at 5:00 p.m., I’ll be reading at the Jessel Gallery Writers’ Salon. I’m so looking forward to being in Napa during the fall crush, always a bustling and joyous time to be in the wine country.

Reminders…

  • Reviews — If you’re one of my favorite people in the world (that is, if you’ve read The Cyclone Release), please consider dropping a rating and review on Amazon. If you’re so inclined, you can drop the same review on Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, or any other platform for book lovers you might use. As I’ve explained to some of you in a special newsletter, reviews are incredibly important in driving visibility and sales. So thank you in advance.

  • Newsletter — If you know anyone who would enjoy quality literary fiction from the unique viewpoint of a Silicon Valley original, feel free to forward this e-mail along. New subscribers are welcome!
